Lighted beacons by night and markers by day, lighthouses have guided ships sailing in coastal waters since 285 B.C. when the first lighthouse was built on an island at the entrance of the Alexandria, Egypt, harbor. This lighthouse -- the Pharos of Alexandria -- was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It stood for over 1,500 years, eventually falling victim to an earthquake.
The first of 12 lighthouses in the 18th-century American colonies was built in 1716 in Boston, MA. Now, there may be as many as 50,000 lighthouses in the world -- many of which are automated and serve as backups for marine navigation.
