The Versatile grape has provided nourishment and enjoyment in all its forms -- fresh, dried (raisins), juiced and fermented (for wine) -- since the dawn of history. Red, purple or green, it holds the honor of symbolizing happiness, revelry, abundance, blood, sacrifice and immortality.
Native to temperate regions worldwide, grapes grow in clusters from woody vines, and were probably first used for winemaking by Persian farmers near the Caspian Sea. Walls of the Egyptian pyramids tell of wine-making before 3000 B.C. A cluster is captured here in polished brass with green leaves for this doorknocker.
