The oyster is the famous creator of pearls. Rich and lustrous, pearls are created within an oyster when an irritant such as sand enters the oyster's shell. From there, the oyster coats it with "nacre" over and over, until a pearl is formed.
An oyster generally only produces two pearls in its lifetime. That makes the pearl and oyster that much more precious. Our oyster door knocker is cast in polished brass- rich in shine and luster.

Bumblebees are one of the only habitats in which a replica of society exists. Based around a queen bee, their civilization functions and exists. The queen bumblebee picks out the nest, gathers the food she needs to reproduce, and then a little world begins.
In terms of pollination, the bumblebee is vital to flowers, fruits, and vegetables. An essential friend to the gardener- bumblebees are known for being gentle. The bumblebees golden fuzz is captured by the bright and golden shades of polished brass found on our door knocker.

Mainly known as the chief ingredient in chowder and the chief commercial clam of the Eastern states, the simple quahog was once a form of currency. New England's Narragansett Indians ground the quahogs' hard shells into beads and used them as wampum, or shell currency. (Purple beads were twice as valuable as white.)
Any Michael Healy door knocker is a conversation piece, but this one might even stir (and continue) a debate that's been ongoing for nearly 300 years: How is quahog spelled? How is it pronounced? Or is its correct name a "little neck," "cherrystone" or just a "hard-shelled clam?"

Clam shells used to even be utilized as currency by Native Americans. The easy carving surface of calcium deposits were made into a kind of coin. In fact, it was first the Native Americans who introduced the idea of "clam bakes" to the first settlers. A delicious tradition.

The blue mussel is a member of a large "bi-coastal" family -- Arctic to South Carolina and Alaska to California. It eventually develops long, tough threads (byssus) which are used as a defense mechanism and to attach the mussel to rocks, pilings or even to each other.
Finding a place to "attach" proves a challenge for the mussels that must compete with other mussels and algae for "room." Not a problem for this bronze version!

A true swimmer, the crab is an alert, aggressive scavenger. Much like its human counterpart of the Zodiac -- the Cancer (for which the crab is the symbol)-- the crab prefers comfort and safety. To that end, the crab chooses shallow muddy waters -- even deeper waters in winter.
This "leggy" creature is found all along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts -- especially in the Cheasapeake Bay. This door knocker accurately captures the fine details of shell and legs down to the flattened hind pair so important to this creature's movement.

The Michael Healy Dolphin Door Knocker celebrates the ocean's most caring, fun loving, and mischievous creatures.
A social creature, the dolphin is one of the ocean's most beloved heroes. Known for being a helper to those in trouble at sea, dolphins have saved people and other dolphins as well. They communicate through whistles; it is thought that each dolphin has a signature whistle that is used as a "name." Living 25 to 50 years, dolphins can be found in both the Pacific and Atlantic.
